Holy Assumption

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The full name of the monastery indicates its principal sanctuaries. The miracle-working icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin was kept in the Uspenskiy (Assumption) Cathedral on the territory of the Upper Lavra. The word "Pechersk" is derived from the network of caves ("pechery"), where the imperishable tombs of hermit saints were preserved. The Greek word "lavra" means "street, village". The word is used for big and populous monasteries. The oldest and most venerated lavra in Rus is in Kyiv.
